GlyphGate is an application server designed to accelerate use of fine typography, page formatting and languages across user platforms and browsers. At one point, GlyphGate used to be rather small plugin that were available for web servers to allow for web pages to use web fonts. As the scope of this software has evoled over the years, this is not exactly true anymore. Today it's an independent application server which primary use is to make web pages not only look better but more importantly to show up faster in web browsers. Conceptually, GlyphGate works much like a typical web server with a big difference. Instead of serving up web pages and other files as-is, such content is being digested into a more compact form before being sent to a browser where it is shown. A typical scenario include having a web page consisting of a single HTML file, a style sheet and some images. When using GlyphGate, these files would be turn into a single binary data packet, possibly including not only the images but also embedded web fonts (this is of course done on the data that is being transmitted over the Internet, and not by altering the original files themselves). The size of the data needed to be transmitted is not only half the size of the original files (or less), there are fewer file that needs to be transmitted as well. This is an important feature, especially for network connected with lots of delays (high latency, or RTT) such as satellite connection and transatlantic connection. Web sites hosting this software may ensure that pages show up fast, but also that text is rendered as intended in web browsers, even in cases where browsers may not provide native support for used fonts or languages. For example, you may view Indic Malayam text set in an OpenType fonts equally well with IE6 on Windows Xp as with Konqueror on FreeBSD/FreeX86, etc. Beyond the speed benefits, typical use of GlyphGate includes extending web servers in order to support non-English text content as well, and to establish a unique corporate identity on the Web through use of corporate typefaces and stylistic web content.
